Amir Khan signs deal with Floyd Mayweather's promoter Al Haymon

Amir Khan could be in line to face Floyd Mayweather next year after signing for promoter Al Haymon Photograph: Dave Thompson/PA Amir Khan has signed with Al Haymon, which should propel him to the front of the queue for a shot at Floyd Mayweather next year. Haymon and Mayweather – who defends his world welterweight title against Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas on 3 May – have made several significant signings lately, notably the Canadian knockout artist Adonis Stevenson. They also look after Adrien Broner and Danny Garcia, potential Mayweather opponents. Haymon, a former music industry mogul who rarely gives interviews but has the ear of Mayweather and the boxing executives at Showtime, is fast establishing himself as the most powerful promoter in boxing. Khan said on Tuesday night: "I am very happy to have signed with Al Haymon who has not only shown that he is a very astute businessman but is extremely knowledgeable of the fight game and always has his fighters' best interests at heart. I'm looking forward to building a long and successful relationship during this exciting stage of my career." Khan would seem to have become increasingly disillusioned with his long-time US promotional partner, Golden Boy Promotions, which advised him to turn down a world title fight with Devon Alexander and sign for a fight with Mayweather which did not materialise. He signed a contract for Mayweather – but the champion did not, leaving Khan to mark time on Mayweather's next undercard against the dangerous New Yorker Luis Collazo, who lost to Ricky Hatton eight years ago. In December Alexander lost to the outsider Shawn Porter, who now defends his version of the 10st 7lb title against Paulie Malignaggi – a former Khan victim – with the winner mandated to defend against Khan's arch rival, Kell Brook. Mayweather, meanwhile, defends against Maidana – who also lost to Khan. A spokesman for Khan said on Tuesday night: "He's still with Golden Boy and will be continued to be promoted by them. Al Haymon will be there advising on fights and helping steer his boxing career going forward. [There is] no guarantee on Mayweather but it should hopefully make things a lot easier when the time comes."
